Latin American Studies and Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures
The position will report primarily to the Director of the Library's Academic Liaison Program, with additional assigned responsibilities in the Collection Development & Management Program and the Reference & Research Advisory Services Program.

• The Academic Liaison Program aims to integrate information services and competencies within academic programs in support of UC San Diego's teaching and research activities.
• The Collection Development & Management Program supports and advances the University's mission by selecting, managing, and preserving information resources across all relevant disciplines, and providing our primary user community with access to what they need, when and where they need it, and in the form most useful to them.
• The Reference & Research Advisory Services Program strives to provide reference and research support; enable learners to become effective, efficient, and ethical information users;  and encourage self-directed inquiry.

Responsibilities of the Position
The UC San Diego Library seeks a highly motivated librarian to serve as the subject librarian for Latin American and Iberian Studies, including liaison service to the Latin American Studies (LAS) Program and affiliated programs; collection development in Latin American Studies, Latin American History and Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures. The Latin American Studies program at UC San Diego is an internationally renowned and multidisciplinary program that offers courses and advanced degrees in academic departments across the social sciences and humanities. The LAS community includes affiliated research units such as the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies, the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, and the Institute of the Americas. Additionally, the Literature Department offers a number of upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in Spanish literature which would offer potential opportunities for course-integrated instruction and for liaison with faculty and students. Library holdings are strong in Latin American history and politics, with a particular emphasis on Mexico, along with elections policy and data for all of Latin America.  The Library acquires significant amounts of history and social science material on the Andean countries and Central America, especially pertaining to migration, women, ethnicity, and popular movements, and selects fairly broadly (in both English and Spanish) in the anthropology, sociology, visual arts, music and literature of Latin America. The incumbent will:

• Collaborate within the Academic Liaison Program to develop strategies to learn about and understand information needs of academic departments and programs, and to build partnerships with research and teaching faculty.
• Actively engage with faculty and students in LAS; serve as the primary contact for consultation on research and educational needs; and develop and promote services and resources to enhance the research, teaching, and learning mission of UC San Diego.
• Build and sustain strong and consistent communication channels between the Library; the LAS program; affiliated programs and research units; and other departments and programs as assigned.
• Communicate effectively with colleagues, students and faculty to integrate information and data literacies within LAS curricular and research programs.
• Design and deliver curriculum-integrated instruction and other learning activities in a variety of formats for LAS faculty and students.
• Develop and promote online subject guides and other information resources for assigned subject areas.
• Develop and maintain collections in Latin American Studies, Latin American Literature, and Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures. Collaborate within the Collection Development and Management Program on selection in overlapping subjects such as linguistics, art, and folklore; and other related subjects as assigned.
• Serve as the primary Latin American Studies and Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures specialist for research assistance, as well as provide general reference services both in person and virtually.
• Conduct training and facilitate communications about Latin American Studies and Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literature resources to other reference providers.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Professional degree from a library school, or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields related to library services.
• Excellent command of Spanish and English, spoken and written.
• Substantial knowledge of the history, politics, economics, literatures and cultures of Latin America.
• High degree of initiative in the delivery and implementation of liaison services.
• Ability to provide advanced research assistance and participate in course-integrated instruction in assigned subject areas.
• Familiarity with electronic resources and reference tools for Latin American and Iberian Studies.
• Subject expertise in assigned areas at sufficient levels to assess campus curricular and research needs and to build matching collections.
• Experience in collection development, reference and instructional services in an academic or research library.
• Ability to plan, document, and complete projects.
• Excellent analytical, interpersonal, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment and with diverse groups.
• Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Additional advanced degree and/or academic work experience related to Latin America or Iberia.
• Knowledge of Portuguese.

Librarians at UC San Diego are academic appointees and entitled to appropriate professional leave and all other perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel.
Salary:  Salary and level of appointment in the Librarian series commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the University of California pay scales.
