Columbia University Libraries/Information Services is seeking applications for the position of Latin American & Iberian Studies (LAIS) Librarian. The LAIS Librarian is responsible for developing Latin American and Iberian Studies collections and research support services in an integrated and collaborative manner at Columbia University Libraries and at Cornell University Library (2CUL). The LAIS Librarian reports to the Director of the Global Studies division at Columbia and works closely with the Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources and Special Collections at Cornell University Library. Both libraries have extensive, rich Latin American and Iberian Studies collections that support diverse and active communities of students, faculty, and scholars on their respective campuses and beyond.
The Librarian is responsible for building interdisciplinary collections in all formats from and about Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, and Portugal in Spanish, Portuguese, English and other relevant languages. The incumbent works in coordination with other subject specialist librarians on both campuses in the humanities, social sciences, and Global and Area Studies. The LAIS Librarian manages budgets and works closely with vendors and technical services units to acquire materials. The incumbent regularly assesses and evaluates the Latin American and Iberian Studies collections, making decisions on bibliographic access and preservation, and actively pursues the curation and development of digital resource collections.
Research support responsibilities include in-depth reference and research consultations and instruction on use of the collection in support of undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students, along with faculty and other researchers. The LAIS Librarian also develops online guides and uses a variety of communication tools to engage user communities and inform them about collections and services. The LAIS Librarian collaborates with instructional technology, scholarly communication, and digital program units within both libraries to advance Latin American and Iberian Studies education and digital scholarship. The LAIS Librarian is the\ primary library liaison to Columbia's Institute of Latin American Studies, the Center for Brazilian Studies, the Center for Mexican Studies, the Department Latin American and Iberian Cultures; and Cornell's Latin American Studies Program and Department of Romance Studies' Spanish and Portuguese programs, in addition to several other departments, schools, institutes and centers with Latin American and/or Iberian subject interests.
The LAIS Librarian will represent Columbia and Cornell in appropriate regional, national, and international forums such as the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials, the Latin American North East Library Consortium, the Latin American Studies Association, LAMP, and the Global Resources Network's Latin Americanist Research Resources Project. In addition, the LAIS Librarian will be engaged in collaborative activities aligned with regional partnerships such as Borrow Direct and the Manhattan Research Library Initiative, MaRLI.
The successful candidate will have:
? Experience as a Latin American and Iberian Studies librarian, or a comparable combination of academic and professional experience;
? Accredited MLS and/or advanced degree in relevant subject area or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
? Familiarity with the history and major trends in scholarly publishing and research in Latin American and Iberian Studies, including digital information sources, and with vendors able to supply appropriate materials from a variety of sources;
? Experience in instruction and research support services;
? Excellent language skills in Spanish and an ability to read Portuguese. The ability to identify and work with materials in other languages relevant to Latin American and Iberian Studies is preferred;
? Excellent communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work effectively and creatively in a collaborative and complex environment.
