The Librarian for Latin American, Iberian and Latinx Studies serves as the primary liaison for faculty and users in Latin American, Iberian and Latinx Studies,  develops and manages the collections from and about Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, Portugal and persons of Hispanic origin in the United States and provides specialized reference assistance and instruction to library users.  The position reports to the Head of the International and Area Studies Department.

Responsibilities

   ENGAGEMENT

    • Serves as primary liaison to Latin American, Caribbean, Iberian and Latinx Studies faculty and users in a variety of departments and academic programs at Duke University, including the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies; the Duke-UNC Consortium for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Center for Latino/a Studies in the Global South and the Spanish and Portuguese Programs of the Romance Studies Department.
    • Takes initiative to identify, meet, and facilitate ongoing communication about user resource needs and service expectations.
    • Serves as a member of the Duke Council on Latin American & Caribbean Studies.
    • Connects with faculty and students and promotes library services related to scholarly communication, data management, open access, institutional repositories, digital scholarship and information literacy. 
    • Designs and implements strategic and pedagogically appropriate instruction for library users using a variety of methods. Collaborates with Rubenstein library on instruction using primary sources.
    • Supports Duke University Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies (DUCLACS) outreach initiatives to K-12 AND Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) teachers.
    • Participates in academic research, writing, editing and publication in the fields of Latin American and Latinx Studies and Latin American Studies Librarianship.
    • Provides in-depth, specialized research consultation and reference for Duke University Libraries' users related to Latin American, Iberian & Latinx Studies
  • COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
    • Develops and manages collections to support research and instruction in Latin American, Caribbean, Iberian and Latinx Studies by formulating policies and selecting materials in relevant formats and languages; monitoring and reviewing gifts; managing the materials budgets including endowment funds
    • Leads Duke's participation in national projects, such as LARRP, LAMP and DLOC.
    • Collects, analyzes, and reports on metrics relevant to departmental goals; uses relevant metrics in making judgments and recommendations; identifies and uses trend information in planning.
    • Participates in relevant discipline groups of subject librarians and fosters cooperation with other subject librarians and technical services staff at Duke and with relevant personnel at other institutions, especially in TRLN and the Duke UNC Consortium on Latin America & the Caribbean.
  • COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Participates in professional organizations, such as SALALM and LASA.
    • Participates in the planning, review, and implementation of the goals, policies, and procedures of International & Area Studies Department and in DUL activities, as appropriate.
    • Serves on library and university committees; participates in professional and academic activities related to Latin American and Caribbean Studies and professional librarianship; contributes to and is active in local, consortial, regional and national meetings to stay abreast of developments/trends in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
    • Reviews professional literature and participates in activities to stay informed about trends in supporting research in academic research institutions; familiar with new library technologies and trends.
    • Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuous development of professional knowledge and abilities through membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Education:
    • Required: Advanced degree in a relevant subject area or combination of relevant education and experience. 
    • Preferred: Ph.D. in a relevant subject area and/or MLS from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Experience:
    • Required: At least three years experience as a Latin American studies librarian (including collection development responsibilities from a variety of sources) or comparable academic experience; native or near native fluency, both spoken and written, in Spanish and/or Portuguese; knowledge of the history, politics, economics, literatures and cultures of Latin America, Spain and Portugal; knowledge of the Latin American and Iberian publishing industries and book trades; familiarity with electronic resources and reference tools for Latin American and Iberian Studies; ability to coordinate collaborative projects; must be service-oriented, flexible, and possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to work effectively and creatively with faculty, students and other library staff in a highly collaborative, service-oriented environment.   
    • Preferred:  Prior experience working in an academic research library. Knowledge of the issues confronting higher education; demonstrated leadership in establishing and implementing successful new programs; working knowledge of an integrated library system such as ExLibris Aleph.

  • Salary and Benefits Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; the anticipated range is $55,000-$75,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
