The University of California, Santa Barbara, is one of ten campuses that comprise the University of California system and is a member of the Association of American Universities. The University Library at UC Santa Barbara is a member of the Association of Research Libraries.
Research & Engagement librarians actively work within and across UCSB academic departments and programs to promote Library services and resources, and to provide in-person and virtual research support as well as information literacy design and instruction. The department engages faculty and administrators in conversations around information literacy learning outcomes and emerging literacies as the Library seeks opportunities to integrate information literacy into the curricula. The Research & Engagement Librarian: Latin American & Iberian Studies is responsible for collection development and management of materials that support the Latin American and Iberian Studies and Spanish & Portuguese departments. Research & Engagement librarians also partner with student support units around campus to contribute to student success initiatives.
The expected effective date of this position is February 1, 2020 or later.
Reporting to the Director of Research & Engagement:
Works in a team-based environment to provide research support, information literacy instruction, and collection development to academic departments and programs, including Latin American & Iberian Studies, Spanish & Portuguese, and others as assigned;
Participates in general Reference Services aimed at the campus community and beyond, including research consultations, referrals, Ask-a-Librarian chat and email;
Contributes to the design and delivery of orientations, workshops, and outreach activities that introduce students and faculty to the Library’s services, resources, and spaces;
Promotes Library collections, services, and spaces, and seeks feedback to increase their effectiveness;
Engages in outreach and communications with assigned academic departments and programs;
Provides research consultations in person and virtually to faculty and students engaged in traditional and emerging research practices in the humanities or social sciences;
Works with the Library’s Data Curation Program and Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory to support evolving needs in conducting data-intensive research and digital scholarship;
Facilitates or creates opportunities for faculty and students to share their scholarship (eg. through open access publishing, poster sessions, events, and exhibitions);
Participates in scholarly communication outreach, education, and advocacy;
Designs and teaches course-integrated information literacy sessions using the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and other disciplinary standards;
Advises faculty on assignment design and learning outcomes related to information literacy, in partnership with Teaching & Learning librarians;
Selects and manages collection materials in Latin American & Iberian Studies, and Spanish & Portuguese;
Manages collection funds allocated to these areas to ensure timely and appropriate expenditure;
Promotes disciplinary resources (collections, databases, primary source material) through the creation of online guides, or digital or physical exhibitions; and
Works with the Library’s Development and Communications staff on activities related to academic engagement in assigned subject areas and student success.
At time of application, ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, OR a graduate-level degree in a relevant field of study with at least one year’s relevant professional experience.
Fluency in Spanish;
Reading knowledge of Portuguese;
Demonstrated understanding of the information needs of researchers engaged in topics relating to Latin American and Iberian studies as evidenced by undergraduate or advanced degree coursework, or work experience; and
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to achieving equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace and the community;
Research-level knowledge of Latin American and Iberian literature and scholarship in the humanities and social sciences;
Advanced degree in Latin American and Iberian studies or in a field directly relevant to Latin American and Iberian studies;
Three years of relevant professional experience;
Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly communication and publishing;
Experience conducting or supporting digital scholarship and data-intensive research; and
Experience teaching in a library or academic setting.

Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.
