Opening the vault of eighteenth-century Andean history: a portal to the Conde de Montemar letters at the University of Illinois Library (1761-1799)

  • Author(s): Sotomayor, Antonio
  • Abstract: This project will create and provide digital access to a collection of Peruvian letters, and the development of a comprehensive virtual research reference portal to extend the library's International Reference Service to Latin America. The letters belonged to the preeminent family of the Count of Montemar, Diego José Carrillo de Albornoz y Bravo de Lagunas, of which we have approximately 300, written between 1761 and 1799. The letters provide a close and unfiltered look into the life and politics of the elite classes of a declining Spanish empire. The project will also develop comprehensive online research guides about the Andes. The Virtual Andean Resources Portal (VARP) will not only list different archives and collections, but also annotate and describe access. Developed simultaneously to the digitization project, the VARP will organize Andean material at the Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and also cover similar collections in South America and beyond.
