Challenges to Caribbean family history and genealogy: archives, sources, and oral history in Puerto Rico

  • Author(s): Sotomayor, Antonio
  • Abstract: In this presentation I discuss the current state of genealogy research in Puerto Rico, paying particular attention to the challenges in doing this work as it relates to archives and sources. Specifically, I will discuss the different roadblocks and brick walls users can encounter in genealogy research on the island, which is representative of other islands in the Caribbean. I present some ways to overcome these challenges, including the delicate use of oral history. Finally, I will discuss strategies used by other researchers and bring examples from my own genealogy and family history research.
