Many subject specialists are increasingly expected to offer library instruction. While conferences and some libraries offer teacher training, the content and products of these trainings are often geared toward the librarians teaching the lower-level undergraduate core courses and not the specialized courses that SALALM members typically teach. Many of our institutions are focused on assessment and we need to be able to document that what we do is valuable to the institution. Unfortunately, most of us didn’t learn about assessment back in library school and we don’t have time or funding to go to a week-long institute. If you find yourself in this position or if you want to learn new ways of teaching, please join us for our pre-conference on Friday June 15, 9am-1pm.
Four SALALM librarians, Alison Hicks, Anne Barnhart, AJ Johnson and Meagan Lacy, will lead an active-learning instruction workshop in which they will apply the experience and knowledge that they gained at more general instruction conferences and institutes to the SALALM context. By the end of the workshop participants will know how to:
- create measurable student learning outcomes (SLOs)
- design active learning lesson plans
- start thinking strategically about being able to measure and prove success.
This will be an interactive workshop and attendees will be expected to actively participate. Participants will leave the workshop with a student learning outcome and an exercise that they can use at their home institution. Presenters will also introduce new ways of sharing our instruction materials.
Please note the discussion on assessment will be limited to the instruction context.
