SALALM Statement on Systemic Racism and Violence
Recent incidents of police brutality against Black Americans have brought a collective consciousness of the racism that persists in our society. The members of The Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) condemn these acts of violence against all people of color.
Solidarity with voices condemning violence and racism involves a commitment to chart an action plan. Therefore, we urge our membership to craft an agenda with concrete steps that leads to conversations around race and the inequities in our profession, our libraries, and our own lives. As an initial step to this introspective moment of individual and collective response, SALALM members have created a list of educational resources to provide a road map for that journey.
SALALM supports the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, the American Library Association, the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association, the Latin American Studies Association, the Modern Language Association and REFORMA in calling for justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and a commitment to anti-racist praxis.
Since its inception in 1956, the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) has been committed to enabling libraries and archives to acquire, organize, and make available the widest range of resources essential for understanding Latin America, the Caribbean and its diasporic communities.
