2023 José Toribio Medina Award Winner

The José Toribio Medina Prize is awarded to Sarah Aponte, Chief Librarian, CUNY Dominican Studies Institute.

The José Toribio Medina Prize is awarded annually in recognition of the best scholarly contribution to the field of Latin American and Iberian librarianship. During the SALALM 68 annual conference held in Washington, DC in 2023, the prize was awarded to Sarah Aponte for her book La presencia dominicana en el periódico Las novedades, 1876-1918: De breve mención a propietarios en la Ciudad de Nueva York. The members of the prize selection committee unanimously supported Aponte's nomination and noted the complexity of Aponte's work, which, through a detailed analysis of the archive, provides a careful discussion of 725 articles, editorial pages, and advertisements that document the historical, social, cultural, and literary experiences of Dominican society in New York City during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Aponte's analysis is followed by references, bibliography, and appendices, and includes an extensive thematic and onomastic index of proper names, themes, places, and concepts that facilitate the reading of an otherwise complex work. The José Toribio Medina Prize selection committee congratulates Sarah Aponte for her magnificent book and contribution to the field of Latin American and Iberian librarianship. Congratulations, Sarah!
