The University of Miami Libraries seek a creative, enthusiastic professional for the position of Spanish Language Cataloger. This position will join a newly hired team of professionals to support the discovery of and access to the Libraries' physical and digital content through resource description activities. The Spanish Language Cataloger will work collaboratively with colleagues in Cataloging & Metadata Services, the Cuban Heritage Collection, and many other partners both inside and outside the Libraries.

THE LIBRARY: The University of Miami Libraries (www.library.miami.edu) rank among the top 50 research libraries in North America with a collection of over 3 million volumes, 74,000 current serials, and over 64,000 E-journal titles. The Otto G. Richter Library lies in the heart of the Coral Gables campus and serves as the central library for the University. Other University of Miami libraries include the Paul Buisson Architecture Library, the Judi Prokop Newman Business Information Resource Center, the Marta & Austin Weeks Music Library, and the Marine and Atmospheric Science Library. The campus also has independent medical and law libraries. The Libraries provide support and services for approximately 10,100 undergraduates, 5,100 graduate students, and 10,000 full and part time faculty and staff. The Libraries have a staff of 37 Librarians and 86 support staff and are a member of ARL, ASERL, CLIR, NERL, OCLC Research Library Partnership, and Lyrasis.
POSITION: Reporting to the Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services, the Spanish Language Cataloger is primarily responsible for original and complex copy cataloging, retrospective conversion, and authority work for Spanish language materials for the Libraries, with special emphasis on Cuban Heritage Collection materials. The incumbent will help coordinate and develop general resource description activities of Cataloging & Metadata Services by interpreting new and existing standards in conjunction with other departmental faculty and staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Performance:
- Performs original and complex copy cataloging of Spanish language materials. Serves as a liaison to the Cuban Heritage Collection and catalogs all materials from the Cuban Heritage Collection.
- Participates in original cataloging of all formats and various languages, as well as metadata creation activities in the library as needed.
- Establishes and revises practices and procedures for providing bibliographic access through various discovery tools in conjunction with other departmental faculty/staff.
- Identifies, develops, and oversees special cataloging projects, working closely with other library faculty/staff. These duties may include: developing and documenting policies & procedures; maintaining statistics; directing, training, and supervising library and student assistants in project assignments.
- Responsible for the resolution of cataloging and authority problems to ensure bibliographic and authority records meet local and national standards.
- Supervises, trains, and helps evaluate cataloging staff.
- May work with the Metadata Librarians and Digital Library staff to aid in resource description of unique materials.
- Partners with the Special Collections Cataloger to provide description of rare materials in Spanish.
- Maintains awareness of general cataloging issues and standards, metadata standards, and librarianship.
- Demonstrates commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse population.
- Evidence of continued professional development, involvement, and contribution.
Service:
- Serves on/participates in University and Library committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate.
- Networks, collaborates and actively participates in local, regional, national, or international organizations regarding issues in librarianship, cataloging, and metadata creation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Master's degree from an ALA accredited library science program or foreign equivalent.
- Professional understanding and knowledge of cataloging procedures and principles including but not limited to: AACR2, RDA, LCRI, LCPS, LC classification, LCSH, MARC bibliographic and authority formats.
- Excellent communication skills (reading, writing, speaking) in Spanish and in English.
- Experience working with integrated library systems, OCLC Connexion, as well as familiarity with authority vendors' services.
- Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately in a service and production-oriented environment.
- Ability to adapt to and embrace a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment, where there will be experimentation in resource description practices and communication formats.
- Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and in teams within the Library and University.
- Excellent analytical, time management and problem-solving skills.
Preferred:
- Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages beyond Spanish (Portuguese, Catalan, Galician preferred).
- Experience cataloging in an academic research library environment and/or contributing to PCC's NACO or BIBCO programs.
- Experience with metadata creation within a digital content management system.
- Experience using Millennium (Innovative Interfaces) and electronic cataloging support tools (Classification Web, Cataloger's Desktop)
- Prior successful supervisory experience; ability to motivate staff and set priorities.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a non-tenure track faculty appointment at the Librarian Assistant Professor rank.
