The Associate Director of Scholarly Resources will play a central role in an exciting transformational project: leading the premier library of Latin American and Latino collections in building a world-class research institution that is fully integrated with the activities essential to Latin American studies, in partnership with the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS). The Associate Director will serve as the Collection's lead bibliographer and public face, representing the Benson in relation to the University of Texas Libraries, university administration, donors and the broader community of library users and collaborators worldwide. S/he will be responsible for directing collection development in a dynamic context, where traditional research library acquisitions and increased emphasis on the collection of rare and unique materials intersect with rapidly expanding opportunities for post-custodial digital archiving. The transformation will also reflect a close, mutually beneficial relationship between LLILAS and the Benson around shared core objectives: engaging scholars of Latin America in advancing archival projects, opening innovative paths for putting scholarly resources at the service of research, with a special emphasis on our pioneering digital scholarship initiatives, and making the Collection central to the mission of teaching Latin American studies throughout the University. Finally, the Associate Director of Scholarly Resources will help the Benson achieve one of the essential goals of a great public university: opening our doors to the broader community of Central Texas and beyond, working with LLILAS to forge an exemplary public engagement program focused on Latin America in hemispheric perspective.
LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections, created in 2011 by the partnership of two venerable institutions, employs about 34 full time professional staff, dedicated to the operations of both units, with an increasing number positioned in the collaborative “LLILAS Benson” space. We are endowed with a budget of roughly $4 million, one-third of which corresponds to Benson staff and acquisitions, managed by the Associate Director of Scholarly Resources. He or she will form part of the LLILAS Benson Leadership Team, consisting of the Director, three other Associate Directors (Public Programs, Student Programs, and Development) and the LLILAS Benson Chief of Staff.
