Arabic/Hebrew Cataloger (Library Associate 1)

Description: This position is responsible for cataloging materials—primarily in Arabic, in addition to other languages of the Middle East, and English—in various formats, using national, international and The Ohio State University Libraries (OSUL) rules and standards, and for assimilating new rules and practices as they are established. He/she evaluates and modifies existing records and creates new records in international database (OCLC); verifies accuracy of authority files in the online local system and OCLC; creates and/or updates authority records; supports cataloging e-resources in the Middle East materials; supervises the activities and the workflow of the Middle East cataloging student assistants; is responsible for hiring and training students when needed; attends and participates in workshops, meetings and committees; engages in and/or supervises special projects involving the cataloging of material in the general collections of OSUL or other libraries; identifies problems and discrepancies in databases and corrects and/or reports to the appropriate section; compiles statistics and prepares progress reports. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: Proficiency in reading and writing Arabic; Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office; Close attention to detail in repetitive tasks; Ability to apply principles and procedures to resolve problems.

Desired Qualifications: At least 6-months copy cataloging experience; Reading knowledge of one or more additional Middle Eastern language, such as Hebrew, Turkish, or Persian; Bachelor's degree in Middle Eastern studies, languages, literature, history, or equivalent experience.
