Job Description Summary The Latin American Studies Librarian provides specialized reference, instruction, and academic liaison services to Penn faculty and students, both undergraduate and graduate, with research interests in Latin America in all departments and schools where they are included as topics of study. The Librarian maintains the Latin American Collection website.

The Latin American Studies Librarian works collaboratively with colleagues across the whole of the Penn Libraries, especially those in Area Studies, and with campus constituencies and donors related to the Latin American collection. The Latin American Studies Librarian works together with colleagues in technical services to set priorities for processing and to manage acquisition workflows. The Librarian will contribute to instruction work, special initiatives, and professional development across the Libraries, helping to foster a collaborative environment and bringing a global perspective to the broader work of the Libraries. The Librarian is also expected to participate in the larger field of Latin American librarianship on the national and international levels with particular emphasis on fostering collaboration.

Job Description

Reporting to the Coordinator, Area Studies Collections, the Latin American Studies Librarian selects and acquires scholarly resources from and about Latin America (and countries with relevant émigré or diaspora communities) in a wide range of subjects and formats in Spanish, Portuguese, and other European languages, in support of Penn's current and future academic programs and in consultation with faculty members. The selection of resources in Western languages (e.g., English, French, and German) with regional provenance is an essential component of the job. The Latin American Studies Librarian is tasked with building and maintaining collections that are diverse, forward-looking, and appropriate to the Latin American studies at Penn—particularly in the form of the Latin American and Latinx Studies Program--and to a global, interdisciplinary community at Penn and beyond.

Qualifications:

An accredited Master's degree in library or information science with a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience or the equivalent in education and training. Advanced knowledge of Latin American history, literature, and culture. A graduate degree in Latin American Studies, preferred. Knowledge of the publishing industry throughout Latin America and trends in scholarship. Must have knowledge of current and developing patterns of scholarship and publishing in relevant fields of study and be committed to the international and interdisciplinary strengths of Penn's academic programs. Proficiency in Spanish, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of Portuguese is desirable, along with bibliographic proficiency in French or German.

Experience using bibliographic utilities for searching and cataloging in is desirable.

Ability to work independently and collegially with librarians and users.
