Job Description: The Metadata Librarian for Latin American Resources provides expertise to support all processes and workflows for resource description and access of the Libraries' digital and physical Latin American collections.

  • Creates, transforms, reviews, and manages descriptive metadata for Latin American digital content and participates in migration of legacy content to new platforms. Recommends appropriate metadata standards, develops workflows, and creates processes and pathways for certifying the quality control of metadata created by others. Consults on metadata strategies associated with digital initiatives and projects, designing workflows and policies to support discovery and access. Trains other library staff on development of descriptive metadata for digitized and born-digital material.
  • Provides description of all formats of library materials, including rare books. Coordinates efforts to provide and maintain bibliographic and authority records that adhere to current standards.
  • Contributes to the development, revision, and implementation of metadata policies in the Libraries.
  • Gathers, reports, and analyzes statistics related to metadata creation and maintenance.
  • Maintains awareness of emerging technologies, standards, and best practices in resource description for physical and digital content.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in library science or equivalent. Professional working proficiency in Spanish, including written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of Latin American history and culture. Demonstrated experience with XML-based standards. Demonstrated experience with metadata transformation and remediation tools and techniques for batch creation and manipulation of metadata (e.g. Excel, Oxygen, MARCEdit, PyMARC, OpenRefine, XSLT, and/or scripting languages). Demonstrated experience working with digital repositories. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills. Outstanding attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. Demonstrated creative problem-solving abilities, initiative, perseverance, and intellectual curiosity. Capacity to adjust and thrive in an evolving, future-oriented environment and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities. Commitment to a diverse academic community, and an understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional working proficiency in Portuguese and/or Latin American Indigenous language. Demonstrated experience with MARC and non-MARC metadata in a library, archive, and/or museum environment. Familiarity with archival collections and best practices related to their description. Knowledge of linked data best practices and standards (RDF, SPARQL). Application of linked data and semantic web technologies. Understanding of issues involved in developing, licensing, maintaining, and/or delivering digital collections of various types. Competence for successfully shepherding a variety of projects associated with cataloging and metadata operations in an academic library. Experience creating and managing projects. Knowledge of next-generation information discovery systems. Aptitude to effectively supervise projects while leading, training, and motivating employees.

Salary Range

$50,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions; typical library conditions.
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation; use of manual dexterity.
  • Lifting objects, bending, kneeling, walking, standing.
  • Likely work between two buildings necessitating two workspaces.

Work Shift

  • Monday - Friday between 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., as arranged with supervisor

Retirement Plan Eligibility: The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
