Heather Sloan holds...

Heather Sloan holds a DMA in Percussion Performance and an MLS with a Specialization in Digital Humanities. She was a 2020-2021 Graduate Fellow with Indiana University's Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities, forming part of a digital-methods consulting team for IU student and faculty researchers. She uses digital tools in support of her long-term, bilingual research collaboration on Caribbean drum-making with folklore scholar and performer Edis Sánchez (MA, Anthropology, Dominican Republic). Recently their work centers on intersectional relationships between drums, urbanization, and deforestation. In addition to exploring the technical and spiritual components of these centuries-old drum-making practices, they are interested in using such documentation as an advocacy tool in the fight to preserve the environmental conditions necessary to support traditional cultural practices.
