Angela Carreño Bestowed Honorary Membership at SALALM 65

The Executive Board of SALALM honored long-time member and Curator for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and former Head of Collection Development at New York University Angela Carreño. She is a long-time librarian who received her MLS from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MA (and was ABD) in Latin American History from Johns Hopkins University. The nominators had the following to say about Angela's contribution to Latin Americanist librarianship:

She served as SALALM president; has been recognized for her work on digital sustainability for Spanish[-language] materials, negotiating licenses, and notably spearheaded the CLACSO Open Access Argentine Monograph initiative which she successfully completed (as a Pilot) with JStor.

Angela was president of SALALM in 2003-2004, when she organized SALALM 49 “Women in Latin American Studies: Reshaping the Boundaries” in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2003. She has mentored multiple SALALM members throughout her years in the profession.  Angela is persistently forward-looking and has been a foundational figure in collaborative projects such as MaRLI (the Manhattan Research Library Initiative) and in the establishment of LANE (Latin American Northeast Consortium). The Committee also recognized her arduous work within LARRP (the Latin Americanist Research Resources Project) to envision and execute a path forward in the mainstreaming of Open Access Latin American monographs for discovery and preservation within US research libraries. Angela's work supporting and promoting electronic resources has also been recognized outside of the Latin Americanist library world, having been the recipient of the Coutts Award for Innovation in Electronic Resources Management from the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, Collection Management Section in 2013. SALALM is happy to honor such a distinguished colleague, and are proud to count her among our membership.
