SALALM Conference Attendance Scholarship Winners 2022

It is our pleasure to announce the winners of the 2022 SALALM Conference Scholarship, Sara Kittleson, Janette Núñez, Paloma Barraza, and Kassandra Morataya. Sara, Janette, and Paloma will participate in Panel 12 during the 2022 SALALM Conference to present their current projects. Please join us in welcoming them to SALALM and making them feel at home.

Sara Kittleson is a graduate student at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she will graduate with a Master's in Library Science in May 2022. She also holds an MA in Latin American Studies from Tulane University, where she studied Brazilian Portuguese through two, 9-month FLAS Fellowships and worked as a graduate aide and library technician at Tulane's Latin American Library. She currently works as a Latin American & Iberian Resources Graduate Assistant at UNC Chapel Hill and as an Open Knowledge Graduate Assistant at North Carolina State University. 

Janette Núñez is a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin (UT), where she will complete a dual master's in Information Studies and Latin American Studies in May 2022. Her research is centered on the intersections of archives and human rights. While completing her B.A in Latin American Studies and Politics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, she interned at the Library of Congress' Hispanic Reading Room. Since September 2019, she has been a Graduate Research Assistant for Special Collections at the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Studies and Collections, where she has created exhibitions, finding aids, and metadata; fielded reference questions; assisted with instruction; and more. In summer 2021, Janette received the UT Libraries Harold W. Billings Staff Honors Award. She has been a recipient of the SALALM Marietta Daniels Shepard Memorial Endowed Presidential Scholarship throughout her graduate program.

Paloma Barraza is a MLIS candidate at the University of Arizona iSchool and a Knowledge River recipient and Scholar. In 2020, Paloma received a MA degree in Art History from the University of New Mexico, where she concentrated in pre-contact and colonial art of the Americas. In 2017, she graduated with a BA in Art History and History with a minor in Italian from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Paloma currently works as a library technician, specializing in reserves and copyright for the University Libraries at the University of Northern Colorado and simultaneously substitutes as a Bilingual Librarian for High Plains Library District. After finishing her MLIS, Paloma hopes to work with Latin American special collections to further expand access to these collections. 

Kassandra Morataya is a Master's in Library and Information Science student at San Jose State University. She graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2016 with a dual degree in Global Studies and Latin American and Iberian Studies. She has been working as a Legal Assistant at the immigration law non-profit CARECEN (Central American Resource Center) in Los Angeles for the last four years, providing services to the Southern California immigrant community.
