PurposeTo administer the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection’s (BLAC) renowned Mexican materials at the University of Texas Libraries, selecting information sources in all formats with particular attention to e-resources.
Essential FunctionsCollection management and development of Mexican materials. Manage an annual budget in excess of 80,000 dollars. Make periodic trips to the region in pursuit of materials that are not captured by the book trade. Evaluate collection growth and shelf allocation for rare and circulating materials. Update collection development policy. Scholarship and faculty support including faculty liaison to the University of Texas’ Mexicanist scholars, and expand digital scholarship by promoting the use of digital tools and resources in research and teaching. Manage the serials collection and the gifts and exchange program. Fund raising and public representation of the collection. Public Service responsibilities include reference duties with periodic weekend shifts, collaboration with other LLILAS and BLAC staff in public education programs with the local Hispanic community, and provide orientation to the numerous Mexican researchers who visit the library.

Required qualificationsMinimum of an American Library Association Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences or a social sciences or humanities discipline with specialization in or extensive knowledge of the history and culture of Mexico. Ability to read, write and speak Spanish. Ability to work in a collaborative environment with faculty, staff, students, and researchers. Available for international travel. At least 3 years professional experience working in a university, library or archive. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred QualificationsPh.D. preferred. Three or more years working in a university setting, preferably in a research library. Knowledge of colonial U.S. Southwest. Demonstrated ability to manage a collection budget. Proficiency in the use of bibliographic tools and resources. Experience with digital collection development and working with faculty and students to facilitate the use of digital tools and resources. Demonstrated ability to establish and meet goals. Professional initiative. Ability to multitask. Experience providing public service to research library patrons. A record of research and scholarly excellence. Demonstrated ability to teach courses drawing on library materials, either alone or with a faculty member. Ability to deepen relations between the library and academic worlds.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
